2027: Obi, Atiku and Sowore Clash Over Fuel Subsidy and Nigeria’s Future

Nigeria’s 2027 presidential race is already exposing major differences among opposition politicians as leading contenders present competing solutions to the country’s economic and security challenges.

A major disagreement has emerged between Peter Obi and Atiku Abubakar over fuel subsidy.

Atiku has proposed restoring fuel subsidy if elected president, while Obi says removing the subsidy remains necessary and argues that the problem has been the alleged mismanagement of the money saved from its removal.

He maintained that bringing back the subsidy would not solve the fundamental problem.

Other opposition figures have also presented different positions on Nigeria’s security crisis, policing and the economy.

Omoyele Sowore has called for a change of government, while other presidential contenders have outlined different approaches to tackling insecurity and improving living standards.

The disagreements highlight one of the biggest challenges facing Nigeria’s opposition ahead of 2027: presenting Nigerians with a united alternative to the ruling APC.

The opposition coalition effort has already faced difficulties, with major political figures struggling to reach consensus over strategy and leadership.
